| For most of us the real property that we own is our most valuable asset and for that reason we want to be certain, that in the event of a loss, we are correctly and adequately insured with no unpleasant surprises. We want insurance to rebuild the structure, pay for loss of use or
rents and put us back in the position that we were in prior to the
loss. Real and personal property can be insured for most causes of loss
including fire, storms, earthquake, and flood.
Property insurance for apartments, condominiums, office buildings, and other commercial structures is normally written in a package, which includes premises liability. However, property insurance for both structures and personal property, such as computers and photographic equipment, can be written stand alone, and is often done so for various reasons. Property insurance for structures insures the structure itself for the causes of loss listed on the policy, such as fire, wind, and storm damage. Property insurance for business personal property can be written to include theft, loss while in transit, breakage, and even mechanical breakdown in some instances. Various specialty coverages for electronic equipment may also be available and may include such things as virus and hacker coverage. Earthquake insurance is a specialty type of property coverage, usually with a single cause of loss which is earthquake, and its resultant damage. Both real and personal property can be insured against this peril. The most important considerations for companies insuring property for earthquake coverage are the age, location, and type of structure. All three items are included in the rating formula for earthquake insurance. Flood Insurance also insures for a single cause of loss. You may insure real and personal property against flood, however your property must be in a flood zone (as defined by FEMA) to qualify for this insurance, which is underwritten by FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Association.
